Tikka Serial Number Year Chart
Does anyone know what serial numbering convention was used by the A/H Army when they completed a full cycle through the alphabet, 1A through 9999Z, and had to start all over again in the same production year? Assuming that rifles were marked in some way to indicate this, what was that marking convention?
I've noticed punch marks to the right of the numbers on some rifles, and recently noticed that when such a punch mark appears on a receiver, it is also carried over to its barrel and stock. Might this be the second-cycle-through-the-alphabet indicator? Regards,JohnLast edited by John Wall; at 07:12 AM. The AH practices of Serialing, both at Steyr and Budapest, generally followed the Germanic system of 4 digits plus a suffix (capital) letter. These series were re-started each Fiscal or Calendar year. Semper Fi,SeanCheck out the newest forum on Gunboards!

Rest assured our America, this experiment in democracy started over two centuries ago, will forever remain the 'land of the free and home of the brave' so long as we never run out of tough young Americans who are willing to look beyond their own self-interest and comfortable lives, and go into the darkest and most dangerous places on earth to hunt down, and kill, those who would do us harm.Nov 13, 2010 Lt General John Kelly, USMC. Both my M95s have oddball serial numbers. I have an H-marked stutzen with a 5-digit serial number (no letter); the original acceptance marks and serial number have been ground-off.

Consensus seems to be that it spent part of its service life as an Hungarian 31M.I also have a Steyr-built M95/30 rifle (S marked) with a Bp-shield-16 acceptance mark; barrel s/n has a 'D' suffix; the receiver has the same serial number but with a 'Z' suffix. Would that indicate that it was re-arsenaled with a new receiver post WWI?-Devo. John - I checked a couple of my M95's not in storage.one of them (a Polish rework) does have a barrel with a.
Following the serial number, so I now think I know what you are talking about. This does appear to be stamped at the same time the serial number was stamped and thinking back, I may have a couple others with a similar marking. I'm not sure if I recall the stocks on my others being similarly marked, but I'll check.
Good observation. I believe the marking was part of the original serial number and it is certainly plausable that this was to indicate a second run through the alphabet.Generally, all Austro-Hungarian M95s will have the 1-4 digit + suffix serial number. Post-WWI Czech production does not normally have a suffix.
Some Bulgarian contract pieces have been noted with a five digit number. Of course M95Ms have a 1 to six digit serial number, but that is a whole new can of worms.DocAV - I am intrigued by your Wn 21 Stutzen.I've seen the 1919 and 1920 dated ones before, but never a 21!
Would you care sharing the serial numbers of those pieces? Looks like another hole that I have to fill in the collection.I have observed a handful of W suffixed long rifles, mostly from 1917, but I'll have to check my records. I also have a Z suffixed 1915, 16, or 17 long rifle (have to check tonight) and a Y suffixed CarbineStutzen. I agree that the 1919 and 1920 pieces will generally be in the X-Z range as well as the I and J blocks for long rifles.I do have a database of M95 serial numbers that I've been adding to over time, but my computer recently died. Most of the database was saved on an external hard drive, but I hope to recover all of the lost information sometime in the next few weeks. I also agree that some useful data can be had from observing the 'S' conversions, but that data would be speculative as to the original configuration of the piece. It can also get cloudy with renumbered barrels, receivers, etc.
Still a useful source. The depot/repair/downgrade explanation for the dot could work, but I'm not sure. The one I looked at this weekend was definitely part of the original serial number and was not added later. I'll check my other long rifles and stutzens tonight and report back. Thanks for the detailed explanation Doc!Devo- On your barrel, can you describe or post a picture of the markings on the bottom of the barrel, especially with respect to the orientation of the 2-4 digit number (should be pretty obvious). That will indicate if the barrel is from Steyr or Budapest. Of my rifles/stutzen that I still have pictures of, the following have the dot after the serial number. All are matching and none appear to be reworks. Hi All,I just received my M95 from J&G as well.
It has a W-n (some icon can't make it out) 18. I hope it means this rifle was mfg in 1918.However, I can't find any serial # on the barrel, stock, receiver, floorplate, bolt, or buttplate. There are 4 stamped items imprinted on the bolt, receiver, barrel, and/or stock. Those 4 stamped items are1) 'S' meaning it was converted to 8x56R caliber only on barrel2) 'K' mfg code for Steyr3) 'Steyr M95' only on receiver4) '856R' located on the stock, bolt, receiver, and barrel. On the left side of the upper handguard wood, right next to barrel is imprinted '85'.Am I mistaken is the stamped '856R' the serial #?
I can't believe if it is because its the same caliber number too. Can someone help clarify?
I can post pics if needed.Thanks. Are the '856R' markings on the barrel and receiver located in the same spot as the numbers in my attached pic? If so it is a serial number. The '85' on the hand guard is an old serial number.Funny coincidence if it is the serial number.Pics would help.I've uploaded some pictures. Is most likely the serial #. After some closer inspection, I noticed a stamped # '56' on the front barrel band and on the barrel what I thought was a W-n looks more like a W-r (maybe a bad stamping).
There are 2 stamped icons on the receiver and barrel on the side above the wood stock on the right side of the rifle. I still can't identify what the stamp is it's too indiscernable.Thank you for the help identifying. The list is by no means complete and any additional serial number/model additions would be appreciated.I just stumbled upon this thread while trying to figure out some information about the Steyr M95 Stutzen Carbine that I received last night from SOG.
The serial number is 185E. From that letter, I assume that it is an early model. The bolt matches the receiver/barrel. Based on the information I found at (which is great), here's what I have (I think) determined: this is Stutzen Carbine (based on the rear sight and sling swivels) that was converted to the updated cartridge in 1936, as indicated by an HV / 36 (Austrian Army acceptance proof mark used between 1929 and 1938), which was stamped over the original Wn-eagle-??
(Austrian Imperial Army acceptance stamp used between 1870 and 1918). The obliterated?? Would have told me the date of original manufacture, but I know from the presence of the Wn-eagle stamp that it was made between 1895 and 1918. All parts are marked K for Steyr. The front barrel band has 3 digits that don’t match the rest of the rifle. The Austrian Eagle appears on the right side of both the receiver and barrel, as well as on the top of the receiver.
The upper handguard is not numbered, so I will either find a replacement or stabilize the crack from the underside. Any additional insights would be appreciated. Sorry for the crappy phone pictures. With a matching stock I would say it is more than that. Please, don't use epoxy!
Use another glue, there are many other choices. So it's a $145 gun? It's never going to be worth $1,000. It's got a visible crack running up the length of the hand guard and a frosty bore.
I bought it to shoot. I used JB Weld for wood and will sand it carefully to reveal as much of the numbers as I can, but I want a strong hand guard because I do intend to shoot this.Sent from my iPhone using TapatalLast edited by Abulg1972; at 10:00 PM.
