During World War II, ROF Maltby manufactured over 737,000 weapons.[1] Rifles manufactured at Maltby were marked either with and M, RM or ROF(M) to distinguish them from rifles made at other ROF plants.[2]

ROF Maltby and ROF Fazakerley were established early in World War II to increase arms production facilities in areas less vulnerable to aerial attack and were known as Shadow Factories.[3] The main British factory for rifle manufacture in WWII was the BSA factory in Shirley. R.S.A.F. Enfield, which until 1941 was Britain's main military rifle production facility, focussed on producing Bren Guns etc.

ROF Maltby's closure was announced in Parliament in July 1957 with dismantling work beginning almost immediately afterwards[4] and complete withdrawal and demolition had been achieved by 1958.[5]

LEE-ENFIELD NO. 4 MK 1 BRITISH WWII Service Rifle.

This auction is for a WWII Vintage Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk1 British Service Rifle in excellent condition. The Lee–Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine-fed, repeating rifle that served as the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century. It was the British Army's standard rifle from its official adoption in 1895 until 1957.

The Lee-Enfield series of rifles were based on the design of James Paris Lee (9 August 1831 – 24 February 1904), a British and later American inventor and arms designer, best known for inventing the action and magazine used in the Lee–Enfield series of rifles.

The No. 4 Mk I was officially adopted in 1941 in response to the need for new rifles during WWII. Two new factories were built to manufacture the No4, at Fazakerley and Maltby. This rifle was manufactured at the Royal Ordnance Factory Maltby in 1943 as evidenced by its Serial Number, 19407 (Maltby rifle serial numbers had a “1” as the first digit) and the letter “M” stamped on the wrist band. It was heavier than the No. 1 Mk. III, largely due to its heavier barrel. A new bayonet was designed to go with the rifle: a spike bayonet, which was essentially a steel rod with a sharp point and was nicknamed 'pigsticker' by soldiers. Towards the end of the Second World War, a bladed bayonet was developed, originally intended for use with the Sten gun—but sharing the same mount as the No. 4's spike bayonet—and subsequently the No. 7 and No. 9 blade bayonets were issued for use with the No. 4 rifle as well. We have both spike and blade bayonets available for purchase and will list them upon request.

The No. 4 action was similar to the Mk VI, but stronger and most importantly, easier to mass-produce. The iron sight line was redesigned and featured a rear receiver aperture battle sight calibrated for 300 yd (274 m) with an additional ladder aperture sight that could be flipped up and was calibrated for 200–1,300 yd (183–1,189 m) in 100 yd (91 m) increments. Ripcorder screen for mac free. This sight line like other aperture sight lines proved to be faster and more accurate than the typical mid-barrel rear sight elements sight lines offered by Mauser, previous Lee–Enfields or the Buffington battle sight of the 1903 Springfield.

This rifle is a fine example of the Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk 1 and is in excellent condition. There are a few minor bruises in the stock, the bore is good with pronounced lands & grooves and the metal finish is near 100 per cent.

RESERVE AUCTIONS

We do not disclose the Reserve on our “RESERVE AUCTIONS” because doing so defeats the purpose of the auction. Disclosing makes it a “Sale”, not an auction, much like a classified listing. Most of the firearms we offer at auction are on consignment with us from one of our clients. Our commitment to our clients is to obtain the highest fair market price possible for their firearms. Thus, we prefer the Reserve Auction and the “HAGGLE” feature offered by Auction Arms/GunAuction. About 50% of our sales are completed via the Haggle. In a Reserve auction if the high bidder does not reach the reserve buy to end the auction the high bidder or the seller may institute what Auction Arms calls a Haggle a one-on-one exchange between buyer and seller to try and come to a mutual agreement on a price. If you are not familiar with the Haggle process, click on Auction Arms “Help & Info” for complete details. For those items that are not on consignment we usually offer a convenient “Buy-It-Now” price.

We are GOLDEN BEAR SERVICES, INC., a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer in the Denver Metro area.
