Likewise, no sign of the Printer Features menu. 10.6 really doesn't want me to know much about my printer! It sounds like you are viewing the print dialog in the collapsed view, whereby you only see the Printer name and the Presets menu. In this view you need to press the triangle next to the printer menu to see the other menus. With the print dialog in expanded view you will see the other menus I mentioned. For example, if you open a PDF in the Preview application and select to print it with the Generic PCL driver selected, with the expanded print dialog you should see the Preview menu.

Click this and you will see the Layout menu, which will be the second in the list, and the Printer Features menu, which is further down the list. The printer is connected to my iMAc using USB. My latest wheeze is to unshare the printer and to load the KX driver on Parallels XP, where is works well on the Windows setup.

Sadly, most of the stuff I need to duplex is on the Mac side, rather than my old Windows. As long as I am not running Parallels, the printer will work in uncontrollable raw via the KPDL driver.

If Parallels is running, then the Mac side gives me a 'printer offline' message. I suspect that this may not be altogether healthy.I don't use Parallels, I have Fusion and don't have the same issue, although I don't use any of my Mac print queues within the Fusion VMs (Win 7 & Ubuntu). Maybe someone else who does have Parallels can comment on this symptom, which on reading does not sound right. If you don't get a response here it may be worth creating a new post about this symptom in this printing forum or in the Parallels forums. Further to the above I have spent a morning trying to make contact with my printer through the network only to be defeated by the impossibility of finding out the printer's IP address. I have tried every method I could find recommended by the various forums and not one of them worked for me. The problem appears to be chicken and egg; I cannot get into the Start Menu because the only emulation that will work with Snow Leopard is the Linux KPDL.

Please, does anyone have any further ideas? There must be someone out there running an FS-1300D on 10.6. It has been a recommendation for the last year in MacUser magazine, and the things that I can get it to print are very good indeed. I don't have this model so I cannot respond based on personal experience.

But checking the Kyocera web site in Australia on the specs for this model it shows that it supports PCL5e and PCL6 as well as this proprietary KPDL3, which is stated as being a Postscript 3 emulation. The driver downloads section shows there is a driver installer for 10.4 to 10.5 and then a separate patch for 10.6 to change the permissions (which is a known issue with older drivers). Here is a link to that page where I found these files. As an alternative to this driver, since the printer supports PCL then you could look at creating the print queue using the Generic PCL Laser Printer that is included with 10.6. This generic PCL driver supports duplex printing, which you access via the Layout menu, and while it is defaulted to 300dpi you can change the resolution to 600dpi via the Printer Features menu. One closing comment.

The information provided by Satcomer does not apply to every single printer. Just because the device has Ethernet (which I see is an option for this model) does not mean it has a built in web page. Also, even if you could adjust internal settings in the printer via the web page, these settings are often over-ridden by the print driver settings.

Many thanks for these suggestions. Sadly, the Australian driver method fails to work because 10.6 refuses to recognise the 10.4-10.5 code, and the subsequent 10.6 patch therefore does not work either. It was designed for those who were running 10.5 at the time that they bought their printer. I have also tried running under the generic PCL driver, with the duplex box ticked and the printer rebooted, but to no avail. Where do I find the 'Layout Menu' or 'Printer Features menu'? I have no access to anything except raw basic functions and a text version of the KPDL driver. Even the status page gives me minimal information, though at least it tells me that the Duplex is OFF and Resolution is currently 'Fast1200 mode'.

Help much appreciated! All I see when I select the PCL Laser driver is a tick box for the duplexer, which seems to have no effect when I tick it. No sign of the long and short binding options. Likewise, no sign of the Printer Features menu. 10.6 really doesn't want me to know much about my printer! The printer is connected to my iMAc using USB.

SheepShaver started as a commercial project in 1998 but is now open source since 2002. SheepShaver is not perfect (it cannot run MacOS 9.1 or 9.2). I double click on Mac OS9 install on the mounted CD ROM Updating hard disc drivers completes, but as soon as it starts Installing to drive mac, Sheepshaver just crashes.
